I have had a few judges touch the tail before. Most of them normally touch for feeling and to see how healthy the hair is. I have had some judges looking for fake tails too.

I know some judges like that. They don't like the fake feeling the pepi or other silicon like sprays and touch ups give. I like to only bathe and use a body mist so the horse feels soft but mostly natural. You don't want a fake shiny coat and most judges don't want to see it. A lot of hard work, feeding, and grooming is your best bet for a shiny and soft coat.

yeah.... i dont like to use it it makes some horses look greasy and gross lookin... i wash a horse and and spray him down with show sheen and that makes them soft but then again not greasy...

Show Sheen isn't greasy, but to me it makes the horse feel slippery and "fake". I use it sometimes too, but I like a non-silicon product such as healthy hair care mosturizer, vetrolin shine, and santa fe body spray.

I never bathe horses. As long as they're fed and groomed properly, they'll maintain a much better coat then if you wash them frequently. Of course, none of them live outside or have the opportunity to roll in piles of mud/etc and they're not grey or pinto. My friend washes her horses every show and their coats could be 100x better if she didn't.
Tails do definately get washed at every show, and dipped and re-blown the day before the class. No gross crimpy braid marks or tailset feathers for my boys.

The tails are just dipped in a bucket to be rewetted and then blown dry again. (Usually do this if the next class is the day after the first) If there's a few days in between, we completely rewash and condition them since repeated drying can be damaging as well.

I guess I wash my horses more than i should but its soo tempting..but we ALWAYS run low in shavings and I dont always get to clean their stalls out every day so they get a little mud stuff on them...but after i work them and stuff i always sponge them off with water with alchohol in it.
