I personally would just use chains. I have 6 ounces on my horse, trying to build up muscle and i can really see a difference everytime i work him.

I agree. I work Misty in chains all the time, and I keep seeing huge differences everytime I ride.

I agree with everyone. Hill work, deep footing, or chains. Chains do not hurt the horse in any way, they just strengthen the muscles.

In the scheme of things, chains really do nothing. Think about it...are 6 ounces seriously going to build muscle? Absolutely not, they wouldn't build muscle on ME if I wore them around. Chains are used basically for the owner's own purpose...your horse will pick up their feet a little higher while they're on. It doesn't stay when they're taken off. Where chains have a true purpose is with gaited horses...the extra jingle behind will help them "step into" the gait. Or, the extra jingle up front will help them pick up a trot.
Stretchies build muscle through resistance training, just like humans that use bungees. When they're not using them for vanity reasons, most trainers actually use them to keep a horse's mind on working...when wearing stretchies, a game horse is forced to concentrate on working rather than wigging out/breaking/etc. My old horse warmed up in stretchies because otherwise he'd try to canter forever before he'd do anything else.
The only true way to truely increase motion and KEEP IT is through good shoeing. Of course, not all horses even respond to that.

Chains don't necessarily do nothing . . . it will normally annoy the horse into picking their feet up. Since they're using muscle to do so, it builds it up just a bit. My mare was barely under level, so we stuck chains on her for a couple weeks and she started going level without them. It my honest opinion, I think it depends on the horse. If the horse doesn't care for them or ignores them, all they do is make them more aware of where their feet are going.

i agree with sarah.. its not necesarily the chain that is building the muscle it is the fact that the horse is picking up higher which uses muscles which causes the horse to build more muscle. just like if you or i pick up our feet higher at a jog we would build more muscle... and another example.. when you do sit ups you arent using any extra weight but it builds muscles.. lol if that makes any since..

mk, so if i would want Rebel to get more action in his gait (cause he dosnt seem to "put out" all that much), would chains on the back end help with that? Or is there something differnt i would need to do to get him to move better?

Just to clarify something. A chain does make a difference. A chain causes a horse to pick his feet up. He doesn't like it bouncing on his feet. It also makes him chain sore. The intent is not to build muscle. If you work him with a chain all the time except when you show him, it will cause him to have more front end. If you work him with full or upper cut blinders, it will give him more reach. I have chain racking horses. I would like to clarify something else. A six once action device is the max. that can be used in the show ring. They are weighed after the class by DQP.
