Just to clarify something. A chain does make a difference. A chain causes a horse to pick his feet up. He doesn't like it bouncing on his feet. It also makes him chain sore. The intent is not to build muscle. If you work him with a chain all the time except when you show him, it will cause him to have more front end. If you work him with full or upper cut blinders, it will give him more reach. I have chain racking horses. I would like to clarify something else. A six once action device is the max. that can be used in the show ring. They are weighed after the class by DQP. well i comppletely understand everything about the racking and walking horses but i think we are talking in terms of walking/racking horses but in saddlebred terms. We use chains to build muscle. Saddlebreds and walking/racking horses is an ENTIRE different world. Walking and Racking horses have a more sensitive skin then saddlebreds do and chains do not give saddlebreds any kind of a chain swore. We dont show our horses in chains because it is cheating even if it does "exagerate" the gait. But my point is that we use the chains to build muscle so the horse can be physically capable to have higher motion and a more animated trot, not to build reach. and we use blinders to get the horse moving through the bridle and to pay attention to whats ahead of them and not to reach.
