If you look at my picture in my sig. my horse is wearing a german martingale. A german martingale runs from the girth, up through the bit and then connects (clips) onto the reins. Ill take some pictures of mine, when I go to the barn. Here is a another picture of a horse with a german martingale on. www.smartack.com/8511.jpg

german martingales work good with getting the horses head up but not too well on getting it up AND in.. i prefer the running martingale for that sake

I like to use a pair of reins connected to the bit like normal and then a pair of reins through a running martingale. You hold them like four reins and they really help with headsets. I also like using a pair of draw reins to replace the running martingale.

lately we have been experimenting with different "headset helpers" with Kappy. At first we just used the german martingale, but then he only got strung out and no headset. Then we tried the normal reins with a running martingale, and he had an ok headset but was way too strong!! We now have him in a draw reins and a running martingale and he actually has a headset and works well with it. So this is a great step in the right direction.
