Oooohhh!! Don't use Vet Wrap!! Lol, it rips out the tail and can cause the tail to rot if it gets wet. When wet, it also becomes sticky and gets a glue like substance on the tail. Instead of Vet Wrap, use Guardtex. My parents buy it by the case because they are vets, but you can order it out of Schneider's Tack. Even though it doesn't come in all the colors that Vet Wrap does, it has more benefits in the long run.

i take mine out about every 3 months... but i dont wrap my tails in anything i just braid it with a big long shoe string and tie it up and it does fine.. because my horses dunk their tails in water buckets sometimes and it just airs out and you dont have to take it down. and i have never had any problems with it rotting out or anything and it stays up if you put it up right.. i just leave all of the feathers and the shorter hairs down and braid the long strips and unless you pay attention you cant even tell that the tail is wrapped up haha but oh well.. it works and my horses have nice thick tails and i put a mixture of my "majic tail potion" on it.. haha well i ill tell yall.. its the same amount of baby oil, leave in conditioner, and listerine. baby oil and leave in conditioner to help condition it and baby oil makes it grow and listerine to kill bacteria... well thats pretty much it

lol.. i dont braid the braid tight at the top so its easier to bring it through... and i always never start the braid until about 3 inches down from the tail bone..

I wouldn't use Vet Wrap at all. If you can't buy Guardtex, then it would be better to just put in a simple braid and use lots of MTG.

I wouldn't use an Ace bandage wrap. The only thing with the braid is that because it can be long, it can get caught in things and possibly ripped out. Also, the weeds, trees, burrs, etc., can tangle the hair and make it "frizz" which is not good for the hair.

That will definatley happen...my mare come in with burrs all the time..So..you think wrapping it better then? If you can;t buy Guardtex, maybe you should look into getting tail bags. I wouldn't recommend the lyrca ones for horses that will be turned out because they tend to tear and snag easily, even though they breathe well. I would probably get a canvas or nylon like tail bag. They normally have a velcro closure or string to tie it into the tail. The thing with a tail bag though is you have to maybe sure that the pieces at top are not getting ripped out from the velcro or strings. These are nylon/canvas tail bags: Here is a selection about tail bags that I found: "Keeping the tail in a tail bag stops the unnesessary damage to the tail and promotes hair growth. Daily combing of the tail pulls the hair out from the root preventing the tail from becoming thick and reaching it's natural length. If your horse is in a fenced area and stands near the fence, just the act of swishing it's tail up against the fence can constantly damage the ends of the tail and stall the tail growth process." Here is another picture: And the link for this one from Stateline Tack (only $7.99!): www.statelinetack.com/global/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=845524441772970&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302029993&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=2534374302024176&bmUID=1134953805212
