Academy is a lower level of showing, it basically consists of riders new to the show ring that arent ready for suit classes. It introduces riders to the show ring without the high pressure found in the suit classes. The horses are lesson horses and can be ridden in either the double bridle or a snaffle bridle. For the attire, you simply wear kentucky jods, boots, button up collared shirts, a vest and a tie. Helmets and gloves are optional. Many people stay in academy until they buy a show horse and then they move up. They have alot of the same divisions..w/t, w/t/c pleasure and equitation, leadline, I have even heard of academy driving and in-hand classes. It is a great experience and it is a great way to introduce riders to showing.

I don't think I've ever mentioned this, but my aunt was one of the few people who came up with academy. When I first heard this, it was during the All-American Classic when she was voted into the Horseman Hall of Fame. Her name was 'Shelly Mehling' and she taught me how to ride. She was planning on me showing, but she died of colon cancer before I could get a chance. When I started showing academy, I had such a fun time. I really recomend it; the shows are normally quiet and are great for getting used to the show scene.

It is also a place to stay if you can't afford an expensive horse + all the bills that go along with them (shoes, training, shows & daycare, etc). Around here, our 4H/open show circuit is very weak and there are barely any saddle seat classes -- most kids would much rather show academy in the various Saddlebred circuits. I know some girls that have been in academy for 6+ years because their parents can't afford the thousands of dollars a month a good horse takes.
Thankfully our circuit has tons of opportunities for classes, so the beginner kids aren't thrown in with the veterans. We have a bunch of all-academy shows and our A shows offer a really large list of academy classes.
