well, our 4-H county fair had a very rough start today. it was around 100 degrees, and they had the western shows and livestock classes going. i had to show my friend's Thoroughbred/Andalusion cross, and it was torture. when Rain won her first class, i called it a day and went to check everything out.
well, i found my friend Alex, who had apparently been trying to call my cell for the last hour. and she didn't have very good news for me, either. it turns out, two ponies, a cow, a goat, and a pig had died within the course of 6 hours of being at the fair. the ponies colicked, the cow hung itself on its halter, and the other two died of heatstroke.
it was all really sad, especially since they couldn't find one of the pony's owners, and she didn't leave her phone number or the vet's. the poor thing had to suffer through the whole thing while people tried to walk him, and after an hour he just collapsed and didn't get up.

awww! Thats awful! Thats part of the reason i think people should stay with animals when they bring them somewhere, because stuff like that happens when no one is watching. its so sad...

That is so sad! Our fair is in August, so it is really hot at ours too. We have fans in the stalls though, and I hose my horses off every hour or so.

Wait, you do pronounce his name "Chee" right? I was just thinking because maybe it is "Chy" and then that wouldn't rhyme with Jubilee.....

Yeah, they should have had fans. We brought a fan for Misty, and she turned out okay. She also did a really good job at the fair. She got a first, two thirds, and a fifth. They also took Lucky, just to get him used to the fairgrounds. He was awesome when I longlined him, and I can't wait to see if we'll actually buy him when the show season is over.
We got a first in equitation, since I was the only one who actually remembered to back up at the end of the pattern. LOL
Our third was in pleasure, because it was muddy and Misty was really picking her feet up and getting excited about it. Lo and behold, it was a QH judge. So he gave the first to the horse with the most sticky-outty nose.
Our other third and fifth were in halter, because #1. QH judge #2. Misty is just not built for the conformation shows. LOL.
