Is an ASB actually shown with his tail like that? Or is it just the way it was painted? Are certain types of show horses shown with tail feathers? Why do they do that? I will try to find more pictures.

yeah a lot of times asb's are shown with tail feathers, i think its mostly horses that have had their tails set (actually i havent seen it on a horse without its tail set, not sure that thats even possible since i think the feathers are partly a result of that whole procedure and the way it grows back)....so that means that it wouldnt necesarily be as common to see in a country pleasure horse, but once u get into show pleasure and other higher divisions the majority of the horses have the feathers. they're meant to feather out when the horse is holding their tails up, its a look thing i believe (i think b/c it makes their tails look fuller which makes them more attractive to a spectator) ^that could all be false info but someone will correct me on what im wrong about lol

That's what I have heard. The tail feathers don't serve a purpose, they are only for looks like Gracie said.

Kind of brings a new meaning to shake your tail feathers doesn't it?

LOL, well I THOUGH that all horses had "feathers" but that they just showed more on ASB's because they has high tail carriage and maybe had their tails tied.

Cookie tries to rub his feathers out! haha But they usually grow back, just not all the way! lol But with Walk/Trot horses (or if you wanna call them 3-gaited horses), back in the day (i guess lol) they used to shave their feathers off...which is what Janet did to the 3-gaited horse at the barn. Ashley, you may have saw him..he won the Jr 3-gaited class at chatt-charity (his name is Vadimus).

I hate seeing feathers like those in the paintings. I would call that being poorly turned out.
I always want them to be blended much more then that.
And I am soooo glad they quit shaving the Walk/trot horses tails. I hate that look. LoL
