What Saddlebred disciplines do you put ribbons in theirn mane? And do you also put one in the forelock or is that just gaited?

Any division besides country pleasure gets the red ribbon braided in their mane. Forelock braids are pretty much optional, I think the rulebook may call for them (unless its changed) but most people don't bother anymore.

CP horses used to be shown with ribbons, but they changed the rules. I came across that bit of confusion myself, because my mom used to own a CP Saddlebred about fifteen years ago, and he had ribbons in his mane. But then my friend with a show pleasure Saddlebred came home with ribbons in the mane. I think it should be CP only again, so we can actually tell them apart from all of the others that show in the padded classes.

hmm. I don't know the exact history of it, but I was under the impression that the red braids we used in the earlier divisions (fineharness/gaited/wt) so they definately would have been used for show pleasure, as that came along before country pleasure. Country pleasure originally started as a much more low-profile class than it is now, so one would assume the no-braids rule would have been there right in the beginning. I'll have to pull out a book sometime and see if I can find anything.

Here's a picture of an example of the red browband/braid: Some trainers opt to exclude the braid wrapped around the bridle. Traditionally, a piece of the horse's forelock was left unclipped so it could be braided into the red braid...but now it's usually just added onto the bridle and the forelock is completely shaved off.

I personally like the look of the ribbon in the bridle...but with walking horse we dont rap it around..it flops when the horses shakes their heads.i think its cute

bella has a little piece of her forelock left unshaved to be braided so i would imagine that when she starts showing, she'll have both braids....it'll look funny tho b/c shes has this long, thick, blond mane which will draw enough attention as it is.
