My Saddlebred is the calmest 5-Gaited thing I've ever met in my life!!! He's got on pads and toe weights and is still a few inches away from being level because he's JUST PLAIN LAZY!!!! How can I get him to focus and get hyped up? He has the action, I just can't get it when I want it!
Whips don't work, he's unfazed spurs too...Noises don't do anything, I've tried chains...plastic bags work until about 1 way around the ring and he's used to it...lol im out of choices!
God help my lazy saddlebred!!!

haha sounds like you have a really laid back horse...ummmm it might sound mean but you can light fire crackers around him (definately not at him) or those little water dynamites...you can throw stuff at him (dont hit him!) or anything like that SHOULD work!

lol its like when we tossed empty plastic bottles at bella's legs to try and make her get up b/c the noise wasnt doing anything and she just stopped and looked at the bottle....sometimes doing too much of that stuff kind of desensitizes horses tho....my trainer sometimes chases us with crops or throws them behind us (our lessons can get intense) maybe u can get someone to do that for you. btw ive never heard of a 5gaited horse being that laid back, that pretty much goes against anything u ever hear lol, i love it...even tho its not fun for you, its kind of funny if u think about it.

Well I knew of people who put rocks in pop cans and tied the cans together on a string and shook it and pretended to flip it at the horse, man that seemed to work for them LOL .

I remember when I had first bought my National Show Horse mare. She just wouldn't go at the speed any of us wanted! And my current trainer always knew to get what she wanted, when she wanted it, and how fast she would get it. Well, one day she just popped Misty a good one across the butt with a whip, and ever since then, my mare has had a lot of get up and go, although it still made me mad that my trainer was so rough with her out of the blue.

yeah it takes a lot of getting after the horse to get what you want..when you ride a Saddleseat horse think it as a battle between you and the horse. If you win the horse will look as good as that horse could ever look and if the horse wins then the horse looks poor to what it is capable of doing. you have to try different things and come up with different ideas and try one that works

Like Gracie said...my trainer will "pop" the crop behind us, or even pop on his back end when I go by. Janet will pick up lil rocks and throw them at the wall in front of us, or throw a water bottle in front of us &/or behind us. She's even accidently hit me with it before! lol Firecrackers could work. Just light one up in front of him (not directly in front) or those firecrackers that all they do is pop. Umm..I'm trying to think....The only other thing I can tell you is, maybe go for 5-gaited Pleasure instead of 5-gaited...If I think of anything else, I'll put it on here.

back when my barn was a show barn...my trainer would set off fire crackers. but now all she does is use the bag whip, hit things against the wall, kick the woodchips around, or she flicks her lighters. omg we have a really lazy horse that is supposed to be like an 8 years old. but when im on him, my trainer flicks the lighter...and wow he is totally different..his show horse side comes out. lol neways I rambled so try the lighter.
