well I think that as long as he is healthy and doesnt show any signs of lameness go ahead and ride him. We have a morgan mare at my barn who is 24 and her owner still rides her. She acts like a 2 year old and she doesnt look a day over 10. She is in awesome shape and full of spunk. So until his age starts to take a toll on him, keep riding him. Plus the exercise will be good for him.

My mare is 22 right now, and if not for the tendon injury Id still be riding her. Light regular excersize is good for older horses. The main things you need to be cautious about is the type and frequency of the activity. Consistency is major, just like for an older person, somebody who takes a walk everyday is fine, but if you havent taken a walk in a month and your old, it may cause you some pain. Depending on whether or not he has arthritis, you need to consider how much you ask, like short trail rides? Or galloping around fields?
Another big thing, is to do a long warm up and cool off for an older horse. Its important to make sure that they arent left with sore stiff muscles.
I think as long as you are careful and considerate of the animal, you could ride your horse for years to come, at WWU there is a horse named Fred, and he is 30..i belive maybe older..and he is still used for lessons.

Horses get better with age and need activity to stay fit. Unless the horse is injured, you are actually hurting them more if you stop riding them. Without a purpose in life, a horse will feel useless and just kind of mope around. They are active animals and want to do things. Everything that Emily suggested is great, so do that! Lol!

As long as the horse can do it, go for it. Misty will be 18 years old this year, too. She acts like a two-year-old monster most of the time and doesn't look her age AT ALL. Turns out her daddy (Arabian) would have possibly been shown well into his twenties if he hadn't had a leg injury. Just make sure he gets a lot of warm-up time, and go a little easier on how much you ask of him.

Grr... I know it wasn't Gen's Fire and Ice though. He is only 20. He is still being shown though, even at the Celebration.

I tried to get Misty ready for trail riding in the fall because she really needed something new to do. I took her out a few times, and it turns out that my sister's pain-in-the-butt mare is safer than Mist. Isn't it funny that a ton of show horses behave to some extent in the ring, but you take them out on the trails and they go insane?
