lol, yall know me poor emily w.o a trainer, so here goes: I ride a paso...lol..ok..and i was wondering if when i was showing pleasure if i HAD to have my legs...uh like wings(do u know wut i mean???), cuz i fidn it hard to keep my legs right, but im good at hands and arms, so i dunno. Also,could u reccomend some way to improve my legs or tips to getting them in the right place, i just dont understand how to get knee contact i think  |

try to keep your kneecap on the saddle (its impossible) but when you TRY it puts your leg in a perfect position and let all your weight drain to your heels and keep your calves off the saddle.
in the gaited part of ss (racking, walking and just open gaited) equitation really doesnt matter (unless your showing equitation) as long as you are keeping the horse under controll and it looks good.

IMO "winged" lower legs are more of a "fad" than correct equitation. In other words, NO, you don't HAVE to have them winged out (actually, you could do cartwheels on top of your horse in a pleasure class and it basically wouldn't count so long as your horse looked good while you did  ). Let your legs hang straight down on your horse's sides. Roll your entire leg in, starting from you hip and on down to your toes. If you *try* to point your toes in, they will generally end up pointing straight ahead (which is good). Something to keep in mind if you have trouble with your lower leg coming too far forward is: when you are sitting straight in the saddle "sight" down the edge of your knee. If you can see your toes, your lower leg is too far forward. Move it back until your toes just disappear. Maybe you can post a picture of yourself?? Do a lot of no-stirrup work and ride bareback frequently to strengthen your legs. Make sure to have correct upper body position when you do, or it doesn't work the right muscles. |

Standing up in the saddle and two point both will help. If you can have someone lunge you either bareback or with a saddle, it will also improve your lower legs.
When my legs start slipping forward my mom makes me ride the most bouncy saddlebred that we have for three miles at a posting trot. She rides along side of me in the Mule (it's similar to a golf cart or Gator) to make sure that my equitation is perfect. My legs are so sore afterwards, but my leg position is awesome.

wait, so the leg postion is more like hunter??? like just keep the leg straight? cuz in paso you keep the leg straight! Im gunna DIE if you are supposed to just keep it striaght!!! ALL this time ive been tryin to fusss with the "wings" and your saying i dont even have to!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ugh, i could have been winning EQ classes if i wasnt tryin to be winged, i can SO do the stright leg, thats what i grew up learning! |

I line up my shoulder, hip, and heel. The leg should be back, but not over stressed. Yeah, for the most part, your leg will be straight.

and you could get someone to video tape you while you are showing and working your horse every day or whatever so you can see what you yourself needs to improve on!

You have a gaited horse so the leg style is slightly different from an ASB rider's leg. If you are showing in pleasure type classes they won't judge your equitation anyways. Wings are really a preference. I think the leg "winging" looks good if you can do it properly.
I think video-taping is a great idea and you can criticize yourself.
I would keep your leg in the proper position but adjust it to where it is comfortable for you.

you dont HAVE to just like i told you before if your not in a EQ class it doesnt make a damn what your equitation looks like as long as the horse looks good. just like i talked to you yesturday about how you need to be focussing on learning how to communicate with your horse verbally and hold off on your equitation.

but i mean, to win an EQ class, do your legs need to be winged? And also, i have been riding for 8 years and have never ridden a horse verbally trained..so i feel like i need to get EQ down before that because im showing right now and verbal training doesnt seem that important and it would take some time...JMO
